A lot of homeowners want better-looking landscaping but don't want to deal with constant upkeep. Mulch needs to be replaced every year or two, it breaks down, and it can look rough fast. River rock is a different story - once it's in, it stays put, holds its look, and keeps the beds clean season after season.

Here's what we were working with on this Shawnee, Ohio home. The goal was simple: clean up the beds around the house, give them a sharp edge, bring in some new plants, and make the whole property look polished without creating a maintenance headache down the road. We laid river rock throughout the beds along multiple sides of the house, used larger border rock to define the edges, and planted shrubs and flowering roses to give the beds some life and color.

The combination of the two rock sizes is something we do intentionally. The larger stones along the outer edge act as a natural border - they keep the smaller fill rock from spreading into the grass and give the bed a clean, finished look from the street. It's a small detail that makes a big difference in how the final product holds up over time.

What you end up with is landscaping that actually looks like someone put thought into it. The new shrubs are evenly spaced, the roses add color at ground level, and the rock ties everything together without competing with the plantings. The whole setup is low-maintenance and built to look good year after year - no annual refreshes needed.

River rock beds like this work especially well on homes where the foundation line is long and flat. It gives that stretch of space some structure and visual weight without going overboard. If your beds are looking tired or you're just sick of fighting with mulch every spring, this kind of setup is worth a serious look.
